iOS 7.1 Jailbreak Demonstrated For iPhone 4 By Hacker [VIDEO]

The iOS 7.1 update has been jailbroken—but onlyn the iPhone 4.

A video posted to Youtube by winocm was recently uploaded showing the iPhone 4 starting up untethered. As you can see in the demonstration, the user shows the settings screen to confirm the device is running iOS 7.1. As CNET notes, a user commented on the video noting that the jailbreak only currently works for devices with an Apple A4 chip, which would limit it to the iPhone 4, the 4th generation iPod Touch, and original iPad.

The commenter also added that winocm and another jailbreaker, iH8sn0w, are working on jailbreaking iOS 7.1 for devices running the Apple A5.

Though some users have reported lagging and freezes on iPhones, along with 5S TouchID issues, the new Apple mobile OS has arrived with improved performance, as apps are crashing at a significantly lower rate than previous versions, according to app monitoring firm Crittercism.

The 7.1 update features a crash rate of 1.6 percent, which compares favorably to the iOS 7, iOS 6.1 and iOS 6 versions, which all had crash rates of above 2 percent, according to Crittercism. The improvement signifies a positive trend, as the total app crash rate for iOS 7 is 2.1 percent, which is lower than the iOS 6 and 6.1 downloads offer, despite a bug that causes some systems to reboot on iOS 7, according to Re/Code.

iOS 7.1 adoption has been high, hitting 12 percent in under 48 hours, with that figure now at about 21 percent.

However, according to users, the new Apple mobile OS iteration has come with an unexpected drawback—reduced battery life.

The update's battery drain claims were put to the test by Ars Technica, who reported that battery was slightly lower on several devices, including the 5S and several iPad models, in comparison to its predecessor, iOS 7.0.6. However, battery loss comments from users have been more drastic,ZDNetreports.

According to Apple forums posts, one user experienced as much as 70 percent battery decreases during overnight charging and another reported significant battery loss after an hour of "intense" usage on the lowest level of brightness. Others suggest that they have lost about half of their battery life since making the switch to iOS 7.1.

With the update, Apple offers CarPlay and tweaks to the personal assistant, Siri, iTunes Radio and TouchID for iPhone 5S users.

iOS 7.1, which also packs some interface refinements and stability and accessibility improvements, willwork better with the iPhone 4, which features a less advanced chip than the more recent Apple devices, as well. The download's release marks the first major update since iOS 7 was released six months ago alongside the iPhone 5S and 5C smartphones. Users of any original iPad from 2010 and any iPhone older than the iPhone 4 will not be able to download iOS 7.1.
