Binny’s bowling brilliance to the fore; scalps six for four as India prevails in a low-scoring match

Medium-pacer Stuart Binny bagged six wickets for a mere four runs as India registered an unexpected 47-run win over Bangladesh via the Duckworth-Lewis method in the rain-curtailed second one-day International, to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, here on Tuesday.
The all-rounder’s figures are the best by an Indian bowler in ODIs, bettering Anil Kumble’s six for 12 against West Indies in 1993.
Sent into bat, Indian batsmen produced a below-par performance to be dismissed for 105 runs in rain-truncated 41 overs-a-side game.
Skipper Suresh Raina’s 23-ball 27 (3x4) was the best that an Indian batsman could manage under overcast conditions.
But the pace combination of Binny and Mohit Sharma (four for 22) bundled out Bangladesh for a paltry 58 runs in 17.4 overs to help the visitor defend its lowest score against the host.
But if India’s 105 was much less than its previous low of 191 at Port of Spain during the 2007 World Cup, then Bangladesh also sank to new depths as its previous lowest against the Men in Blue was 76 in 2003 at Dhaka.
Mohit triggers collapse
Mohit started the rot for Bangladesh by sending back openers Tamim Iqbal for 4 and Anamul Haque for nought.
Binny joined to send top-scorer Mithun Ali back for 26 and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim for 11. The rest of the batting collapsed like a pack of cards.
Put into bat, the stunning Indian collapse was triggered by Taskin Ahmed, who returned with figures of five for 28, the best debut bowling performance by a Bangladesh player and the fifth-best bowling effort by a debutant.
India lost Ajinkya Rahane for nought before rain halted play after 5.1 overs.
With three hours lost because of the rain, the match was reduced to 41 overs.
The lanky Taksin continued to trouble the Indian batsmen in conditions conducive to swing bowling as he became the eighth bowler in the history of ODIs to bag a five-for in his maiden match.
The final match of the series is slated for June 19 at the same venue.
