Apex court slams Akhilesh govt for Muzaffarnagar riots, but says no need for SIT probe

Apex court slams Akhilesh govt for Muzaffarnagar riots, but says no need for SIT probe

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that there is no need for a CBI or a SIT investigation into the Muzaffarnagar communal riots "at this juncture".
The SC also said the state government was responsible for initial negligence when the riots broke out and asked it to take more effective measures.
The apex court also pulled up the central and state intelligence agencies for not alerting the Uttar Pradesh government on the impending riots.
It ruled that all accused persons named in the Muzaffarnagar communal violence cases must be arrested irrespective of their political affiliation.
It has directed the UP government to give police protection to victims till the completion of trial.
The Jat-Muslim riots in August-September last year left over 50 people dead and some 50,000 Muslims in relief camps. A total of 566 criminal cases were registered — including six of rape and molestation of Muslim women, in which only one person has been arrested so far.
The court is hearing a bunch of petitions that accuse the Samajwadi Party government of extending favours to one community.
