Bangkok to lift state of emergency

Bangkok to lift state of emergency

A state of emergency in Bangkok is to be lifted tomorrow, to the relief of tour operators who experienced widespread cancellations during a period of mass street protests

Thailand facing £1.6bn loss from tourism if protests continue
While tourist attractions have remained open and unaffected throughout there have been a few violent clashes at protest sites
The 60-day emergency decree was put in place in January in response to unrest and occasional violence that led to the death of 23 people.
Protestors had orchestrated a “shutdown” of the city, with hundreds initially flocking to key protest sites in the city centre and disrupting traffic on some routes.
Numbers attending protest sites have waned in recent weeks, however, and are now confined to Lumpini Park in Bangkok's central business district and a few other sites.
But political analysts say the situation is far from resolved with the campaign against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra turning to the courts, where she is facing a number of legal challenges.
